Pretty much why the quests felt stale and "been there, done that" to me most of the time. I just didn't like the setting, didn't feel anything epic about it, felt mostly generic compared to Titan Quest (the "clone"). I am not saying that everyone should hate it or something. PS: My Diablo hate is just personal taste. the way they always had Mages behind archers who were covering the melee fighters asses. I hardly died in Risen compared to the countless times I was killed by Orcs in G3 (esp. The graphics are one of the best out there (I always enjoyed G3 foliage, Risen makes it even better). It's fun, but I didn't see any huge changes from G3. I have played and completed Risen (it's in the Xfire list I linked to, way shorter than Gothic 3 and pretty much a tweaked/improved version of G3 with less varied environments but more focused storyline/world.

It was mortals vs Titans ffs, that setting is just amazing (plus the level design is still the best I have ever seen in any RPG). All in all TQ quests were always justified (most of the time from what I can remember). Titan Quest on the other hand had pretty much Diablo like quests but some nice variations where the NPC's actually triggered some quests while you were playing through short cinematic while playing. BUT, there were a lot of escort, hold the fort, assist those troops and even "control this troop in top down mode from tower" quests. Yes Hellgate had Torchlight like Fetch quests. The Search For Cain is especially epic, given that you have to do like 12 things just to get to him. Most of the game is driven by simple loot-and-upgrade, but the quests help tie the randomization into a story that feels epic, rather than having every guy and his mum asking me to fetch his damn bootsies. While most of these quests are simple "go here, kill them" the game manages to make the quests feel epic thanks to their rarity and scope. Find the Horadric Malus (Easy) - Move through the monestary and search for the hammer Clear the Forgotten Tower (Easy) - Kill everything in the tower Find Cain and rescue him (Medium-Hard) - Find the proper sequence for the Cairn stones and warp to Tristram, rescue Cain, kill the corrupted old populace. Find and kill Blood Raven (Easy-Medium) - Kill the corrupted (and fairly awesome_ Rogue in the Graveyard Clear the Den of Evil (Easy) - Kill all monsters in a cave near the camp It wasn't a game where you'd get like 20 quests every time you went into town, but rather you had very few quests that lent an epic feel to the game. It's worth pointing out that there were only about 6 quests in each act of Diablo 2, and each quest was vastly different from the others.
